ABOUT US

AS A UNIQUE SOCIAL ENTERPRISE, WE ARE AS PASSIONATE ABOUT GIVING PEOPLE A CHANCE AS WE ARE ABOUT PRODUCING DELICIOUS ARTISAN BREAD.

OUR BREADS ARE ENTIRELY HAND-CRAFTED, BAKED DAILY AT SUNRISE AND WE SOURCE OUR FLOURS FROM LOCAL MILLS. WE MAKE BREAD SLOWLY, WITH CARE AND DEDICATION TO EVERY LOAF, JUST AS IT HAS BEEN MADE FOR HUNDREDS OF YEARS.

But good bread is only half the story. As a social business we aim to provide real employment opportunities to vulnerable local women so that we can break the cycle of poverty, unemployment and offending. By working through our structured work placements female offenders will gain practical skills and experience in a real work environment. Our team is made up of paid staff, volunteers and women on work placements and we all work together, united in our passion to produce the finest bread and baked products in Northamptonshire and committed to improving the lives of those who have not had an easy time. For us, Good Bread Doing Good is more than a strapline.

OUR ECO CREDENTIALS

“Collectively, the big bakers that produce the majority of our loaves transport more than twelve million of them around the country each day. Diesel-guzzling lorry loads are taken up and down motorways from large plant bakeries to central distribution depots and from there may well be transported to local distribution hubs and then on to retailers.

The Real Bread Campaign is supporting work to create shorter grain chains, that is to say, reducing the distance between where grain is grown, the flour milled, the dough baked and the bread consumed. An example is a neighbourhood baker reducing food miles by producing Real Bread close to or even at the point of sale using flour milled from locally-grown grain.

Of the 2.6 billion individual slices of bread that we throw away each year, only 8.6% are from home-baked loaves. Added to this, £50 million worth of bread loaves are thrown away each year completely untouched; 100% of these are bought bread.”

We have selected the local independent flour mill Heygates> as our flour supplier. By using their Bugbrooke Mill for all of our flour and seed requirements we will be minimising our food miles which is very important to us as a social business. We continue the theme of local suppliers with our exclusive use of Farrington’s Mellow Yellow Cold Pressed Rape Seed Oil. An award winning oil with many health benefits, it is produced and bottled in the County and we are very proud to use this fantastic product in several of our artisan recipes.

We have a strict waste policy, that will ensure any waste products are either donated to clients, volunteers or to local organisations working with disadvantaged people.

Supporting such local initiatives fits perfectly with our ethos of zero waste, minimal environmental impact and supporting disadvantaged communities.
